How To Measure Book Cover Spine — USA Standard

How to measure book cover spine with physical caliper — USA standard method.

I keep a Mitutoyo digital caliper on my desk in Ilorin. To measure your book cover spine correctly: open caliper, zero it, place book spine-up on flat table, close jaws gently across spine width — not diagonal, not over the fold-over. Read in mm and inches. USA standard KDP books: 100 pages white = 0.261" (6.63mm), 200 pages = 0.486" (12.35mm), 300 pages = 0.712" (18.08mm). Cream is thicker: 100 pages = 0.286" (7.26mm).

Why caliper matters: paper expands with humidity. A book printed in Lagos humidity vs Arizona dryness differs 0.005". KDP prints in USA (Kentucky) at ~45% humidity. Our tests with physical caliper on USA standard KDP books account for this. Don't use ruler — ruler adds 0.02" error, enough to make cover text wrap.

Steps: 1) Count pages including blank front/back. 2) Identify paper: white or cream (check Amazon listing). 3) Measure 3 copies, average. 4) Use formula or our calculator.
