Book Spine Formula — USA Standard

Book spine formula white vs cream paper KDP — caliper-tested formula.

White paper 50#, 55#, 60# and cream 50#, 60# each have different thickness. I bought USA standard KDP white and cream books, stripped covers, measured 100-sheet stacks with caliper in Ilorin. Results: White 60# = 0.002252" (0.0572mm) per page, Cream 60# = 0.002500" (0.0635mm), White 55# = 0.00210", Cream 50# = 0.00230". KDP uses 60# white and 60# cream for most 6x9.

Formula: Spine = (Page Count × Paper Thickness) + 0.036" (0.034 binding + 0.002 hinge). Example: 300 pages white: 300×0.002252=0.6756+0.036=0.7116". Cream: 300×0.0025=0.75+0.036=0.786". Difference 0.0744" (1.89mm) — enough to misalign cover. Always check paper type.

Our calculator uses this caliper-tested formula, not KDP's rounded estimate. Built in Nigeria for authors in USA & worldwide, integrated Word Count→Pages→Spine: upload .docx/.pdf/.epub or paste manually (250w=1 page double USA standard, 500 single), auto-feeds spine.
